Steck places a high priority on developing students who are confident and skilled readers. For various reasons, some students will require a little extra support to reach reading proficiency. For this reason, we offer a reading intervention program to facilitate student growth. Students are referred for participation by their classroom teachers. The program most often used is a highly researched and proven program: Leveled Literacy Intervention. Students meet with a small group of their peers three days a week for instruction at their appropriate level. The pace is fast, yet friendly with high interest materials and a daily homework component. Our goal is to make above average growth so that students can move out of the program and back into their classrooms for all of their reading instruction.

Leveled Literacy Instruction is a scientifically-based system that is designed to prevent literacy difficulties rather than correct long-term failure. It is designed to supplement, not substitute for, literacy instruction within the classroom.

The 30 - 40 minute sessions (Tues., Wed., Thurs.) provide instruction in reading, writing, and phonics/word study. Each day, a new book is introduced. On alternating days, the books are at a high instructional level, allowing the student to implement and practice new strategies. Each day, the student will take home a copy of their new book and an assignment which is to be completed at home with adult support.
